Neurofeedback therapy can help.

Nuerofeedback is also used by athletes, musicians, business people, and others who want to “up their game’ to access peak performance in their work.

What is Neurofeedback?

Similar to improving your physical condition by exercising at the gym, neurofeedback is a way of improving your mental condition by training your brain to function at peak performance. Neurofeedback works with the brain directly (by influencing brainwave patterns), whereas talk therapy works with with the mind (by influencing choices, thoughts, feelings). This highly effective treatment is truly remarkable.

http://www.CenterforBrain.com Mike Cohen, from the Center for Brain Training in Florida, describes what neurofeedback is, how it's different from other brain-related options, and how brain training can help people gain better control of attention, emotions, behavior, and performance. A tremendous amount of research supports the benefits of neurofeedback for autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, migraines, seizures, brain injury, addiction, RAD, and more.

How long does it take?

It is recommended that a minimum of 24 (1 hour) sessions of neurofeedback be completed to create lasting change for most problems. In the case of Attention Deficit related problems as well as more acute symptoms, it is recommended to complete a minimum of 36 (1 hour) sessions of neurofeedback.

How frequent are the sessions?

Neurofeedback works best when it is done for a minimum of 2 hours a week, especially at the beginning of treatment. This regularity helps the brain to catch on to the new things we will be trying to help it learn. Most people schedule 2 x 1 hour sessions per week.

What does training look like?

Training itself is like taking your brain to a gym designed for brains. Your brain will experience several different “exercises” in each session, much like circuit training at a gym. What this actually looks like is you sitting back in a comfortable chair and watching something on a screen or listening to sounds through headphones. You don’t have to try, or think, or judge your progress – in fact those approaches will only get in the way of letting your brain learn from the feedback that it is experiencing. You just need to show up with an open, willing, and curious attitude, and your brain will do the learning without you even thinking about it consciously.

Does it last?

The short answer is, yes! Perhaps the best news of all about Neurofeedback is that the new patterns that the brain learns will continue to be available for the brain to use even after training finishes. Much like when your brain learns what it takes to ride a bike – the balance, the pedaling, the speed needed to stay up – your brain will become familiar with more optimal patterns of activity. After experiencing these patterns and associated states of being (such as being relaxed and focused) repeatedly, your brain will remember how to “go there” and access these patterns when needed in your life.

Unlike psychotropic medications, neurofeedback does not have to continue indefinitely to enjoy the benefits. Also unlike medication, it has no unwanted side effects.
